Amed Harbour, located on the northeast coast of Bali in Karangasem Regency, was previously a popular departure point for travellers heading to the Gili Islands and Lombok. The harbour was especially convenient for visitors staying in Amed, Tulamben and other parts of East Bali because it offered one of the shortest sea routes between Bali and the islands.
However, regular fast boat services from Amed Harbour are currently unavailable.
Why Did Fast Boats Stop Operating from Amed Harbour?
Fast boat operations from Amed were stopped because the departure point did not meet the required standards for regular passenger harbour operations.
Unlike larger harbours in Bali, such as Padang Bai Harbour or Sanur Harbour, Amed was never developed as a modern passenger terminal. Fast boats operated from a small coastal area with limited harbour facilities.
One of the main reasons was the lack of suitable infrastructure needed for safe and organised passenger services, including proper facilities for regular boarding operations.
Is Amed Harbour Permanently Closed?
There is currently no confirmed date for the return of regular fast boat services from Amed Harbour.
Future operations depend on harbour development, infrastructure improvements and official approval from the relevant authorities.
Travellers should always check the latest information before planning a boat journey directly from Amed.
How to Travel from Amed to the Gili Islands Today
Even though direct fast boats from Amed are currently unavailable, travelling from Amed to the Gili Islands is still easy.
The most common option is:
Amed → Padang Bai Harbour → Gili Islands
Travellers usually take a car transfer from Amed to Padang Bai Harbour and continue by fast boat to:
- Gili Trawangan
- Gili Air
- Gili Meno
Padang Bai offers regular fast boat departures and a wider selection of boat operators.
Travelling from Amed to Lombok, Nusa Penida and Nusa Lembongan
For Lombok, travellers can use fast boats from Padang Bai Harbour to Bangsal Harbour or the public ferry connection between Padang Bai and Lembar Harbour.
For Nusa Penida and Nusa Lembongan, travellers usually travel first to Padang Bai Harbour or Sanur Harbour and continue by boat from there.
The Future of Amed Harbour
Amed remains one of Bali’s most beautiful coastal destinations, famous for diving, snorkeling, fishing traditions and views of Mount Agung.
Although fast boat services are currently unavailable, Amed’s location close to Lombok and the Gili Islands means the harbour could become an important connection point again if the required facilities are developed in the future.
